Life is But a Competition ..

Life is but a competiton.. says no one.

The idea of being in competition with another is truly asinine. This mentality often labeled "crabs in a bucket" is the secret killer amongst our community especially in the arts. Rather compete, complete.

Creativity is a shared space and born from kinetic energy between a multitude of individuals. Helping each other will not going to stifle your vision nor is it going to eliminate you.  We as people have to learn how to work as team. The bigger the team the bigger ability to conquer.

For every artist born, one is detoured due to the feeling of not being supported. And for every artist winning, one is looking up to them wishing they had the courage to showcase their talent. The world is like a game of tennis. The game of tennis is categorized into two segments- singles and doubles. Singles matches highlight one player, but is overshadowed by the doubles match.

In the doubles match, both players showcase their strengths and weakness all while being a team player. For example, Serena and Venus Williams. Both athletes were introduced into the world as the powerhouse tennis players who swept every competitor underneath of the rug in a doubles match. While they would eventually went off to dominate the singles category., It was their doubles matches that allowed both to understand the strengthens and hone in on fixing their weakness.

I encourage every creative, young and old to bond together to make a magically experience and tell our stories; for these stories motive each other to continue to dedicated their time on perfecting their craft.

Startling Truth

When We Come To It

When we come to it
When the curtain falls on the minstrel show of hate
And faces sooted with scorn and scrubbed clean
When battlefields and coliseum
No longer rake our unique and particular sons and daughters
Up with the bruised and bloody grass
To lie in identical plots in foreign soil

When we come to it, Then we will confess that not the pyramids with their stones set in mysterious perfection nor the gardens of babylon hanging as eternal beauty in our collective memory not the grand canyon kindled into delicious color by Western sunsets When we come to it, we this people on this minuscule and pithless globe who reach daily for the bomb, the blade and the dagger yet who petition in the dark for tokes of peace we this people on this mote of matter in the mouths abide cankerous words which challenge our very exisitence yet out of same mouths come songs of exquisite sweetness

We, this people, on this small and drifting planet whose hands can strike with such abandon that in a twinkling, life is sapped from the living yet those same hands can touch with such healing, irresistible tenderness
That the haughty neck is happy to bow
And the proud back is glad to bend
Out of such chaos, of such contradiction
We learn that we are neither devils nor divines

When we come to it
We, this people, on this wayward, floating body created on this earth, of this earth
Have the power to fashion for this earth
A climate where every man and every woman
Can live freely without sanctimonious piety
Without crippling fear

When we come to it
We must confess that we are the possible
We are the miraculous, the true wonder of this world
That is when, and only when
We come to it.

We, this people, on a small and lonely planet traveling through casual space past aloof stars, across the way of indifferent suns                                                                 To a destination where all signs tell us it is possible and imperative that we learn a brave and startling truth

Homophones

Homophones- noun, each of two or more words having the same pronunciation but different meanings, origins, or spelling.

The polarizing use of melanin in recent times is a perfect example of a homophone. Every publication under the sun has featured a story discussing what "melanin", "black girl magic", "black magic" is without truly understanding the importance of melanin. To truly understand what melanin is to watch lives dwindle away by hands under oath and proudly go forward each day with more pride then ever; because you know those slain lives don't diminish the power of melanin. Melanin is the ability to see opportunities skip over you, but remain humble as you know your opportunity isn't given but created.

"Don't ever give up. You have a right to inherit the universe. It was given to you the moment you were born."-Shonda Rhimes

See, we've been taught that melanin is our armor our shield and unspoken truth. It is with great esteem we wear this uncategorized beauty and learn how to navigate life. It is with courage that we wear this discriminating skin color and watch the world marvel at the gifts of our culture. It is with glee, we smile and look to the sky and understand the melanin we have is a possessive, intoxicating, fulfilling asset that isn't attainable- no matter how media coverage.

Urban Foliage

Foliage- The Forgotten Healing Tool

Living in the Big Apple has it perks and drawbacks; late night shopping, great cuisine, culture at your fingertips and endless knowledge. Unfortunately, the later is the most exhausting. The constant consumption of knowledge is quite suffocating. Knowing you have the ability to learn anything you've ever imagined within a matter of seconds creates the inability to shut off your mind.  You've unconsciously created an insomnia trance.  We've wired our minds to continuously search for the next best thing or to be in the know of all things.

Instead of training our minds to consume things in a New York minute, take a breath of fresh air and recharge. The foliage around us in this metropolis is sometimes the knowledge we need to grow as individuals. Besides, a little greenery is good for both the food palette and body.

White Matter

The Obligatory Fork in The Road.

The moment in which, you say, right or left?

The moment in which, you're unsure if you're really making the right choice.

The moment in which you say to yourself, is this cool? Am I really being fulfilled?

Am I just listening to the voices in my head at 1 am?

The moment the white noise starts to settle in and you say, wait...

I am on to something.

Then, it hits you.. Rushing.

Sensory overload.... You exhale and internally freak out!

WAIT! I think I love this!

Reverie

Snap out of it!

This old familiar phrase commonly used to remind a person to be present is the demise of creativity. Often times we're criticize for being lost in thought or using our imagination. What if, this imagination is the outlet needed to shield oneself from the perils of the world?

Why can't we live life like Harold? In theory, his purple crayon was his shield. Being lost in ones thought, isn't so bad at all. The idea of being born into the world with a set purpose and inherent value is the freeing. Much like your imagination, this ideology creates a barrier from being limited.

Let's pick up our purple crayons and keep drawing.

Freedom

I, Too America.

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes, But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,"

Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
